Erythromelalgia, also known as Man on Fire Disease, is a rare disease that affects approximately 1 in 100,000 individuals in the US. This condition is marked by symptoms such as redness, increased warmth, and swelling of the skin, which can impact the extremities and face. Patients often experience severe burning sensations and throbbing pain during recurrent episodes known as flares. Increasing awareness about erythromelalgia is crucial, and patient advocacy plays a vital role in supporting those affected. Additionally, initiatives like the Red Hand Challenge aim to raise awareness and foster understanding of this challenging condition.
The Red Hand Challenge is an online awareness campaign initiated by 10-year-old Lynn and her family to advocate for patients suffering from the rare disease Erythromelalgia, which is both incurable and painful. Launched in December 2017, this social media campaign has gained traction in over 20 countries worldwide. Participants are encouraged to paint their hands red and share a photo on social media using the hashtags #Redhandchallenge #GirlonFire while tagging @Thefirefightermom to help raise awareness.
